This unique brew is made from “first runnings”, or highly concentrated mix of barley sugars and water extracted from the mash. The “second runnings” that come from rinsing the grain for remaining sugars are used to make the Mugwort ESB. Once the barleywine is finished with primary fermentation, it spends 3 months in Treaty Oak Ghost Hill Bourbon barrels. The end result is a high ABV beer that drinks like an old fashioned, with tons of bourbon and oak flavors combining with crystal malts and a heavy dose of mugwort, which contributes woodsy, floral, citrus, and sweet flavors.
